Snorkels

I have experienced first hand the effects of not having a Snorkel on a 4WD, well my father did actually in his V8 Laredo Grand Cherokee back in 2003 at Bribie Island, Queensland. After what was a lovely day with family and friends on the beach we headed back late afternoon to find some of the freshwater lagoon washouts had broken they’re banks and formed some pretty gnarly running water washouts.

I went though in my KJ, (lifted with bigger tyres but no Snorkel at the time) only to just make it out the other side – popped my bonnet and quickly opened the airbox to find it half full with water!! Before I could think twice to stop my father, he had already committed to cross. As his V8 Laredo made a desperate dash to come out the other side (with V8 exhaust burbling underwater) his engine made a terrible “clank clank clank, dakka dakka dakka” noise and stopped just on the bank of the exit. It spat 2 piston’s out through the side of the block........say no more. Its a good thing Airflow now have a great Snorkel for both the Petrol and CRD WG/WJ Grand Cherokee’s!

And it's not just water that they keep out, it's dust as well. Fitting a Snorkel seems to be a pretty common mod amongst us Jeepers’ here in Australia and it's catching on in the US which is great to see. They do work, and provide some much welcomed cool ram air into the vehicle’s airbox. I find it's the highway tourers that benefit mostly from better fuel economy associated with the addition of a Snorkel.
